and that is the sequester. we know that mr. panetta, the secretary of defense, said that it would be a disaster, as it would be. and i would refer you to the chapter. where did that originate? where did that idea come from? it turns out that it can from the white house. it turns out he had a meeting with senator reid and congresswoman pelosi and suggested this. and initially and apparently they were not keen on the idea. now how much does the defense amount to percentage wise in terms of the problem that we as a nation face? if you talk about giving budgetary spending every year, discretionary spending, it is 50%. if you talk about the problem that includes entitlements, it is 13%. if you want to look at the $55 billion coming out of the sequestered, that works out to about 1.4% of our overall problem. but better than 10% of the defense budget. are you going to tell me that the solution to the national financial problem is cutting defense? and by the way, do you honestly think that the mothers in iran, that the north koreans, but the radical muslims including al qaeda which have been defeated but now it tur

individuals arrested in turkey that defense secretary panetta said the u.s. is looking with interest and possible connection with these attacks. so no real hard suspects yet. clearly there is going to be a lot more investigating and a lot more piecing of this together. i thought one other thing, brooke, i felt what was really interesting is one of the women at the state department, charlene lamb, who was a security official who was the one that made -- denied these requests, i think there is going to be real accountability today over what happened. the buck really stopped with this woman. these didn't go up to the chain of command. and i think that's one of the things that this review board will be looking at. >> okay. elise labott for us. elise, we'll keep watching the hearings today, still on the hill. elise, thank you. >>> as polls tighten and now move toward mitt romney, did the republican just move toward the middle on the controversial issue of abortion? i'm brooke baldwin. the news is now. >> this is, i think, paul's first debate. i may be wrong. he may have done something in

attack. by september 27th defense secretary leon panetta said it became clear the attack was planned. on tuesday of this week the state department explicitly contradicted the story told by the administration saying there had been no protests outside the consulate in benghazi. the attack continues to be a clear political issue. it became clear that the story that we heard, the american people, in wake of the attack was simply not accurate. amy davidson, senior editor of the new yorker is back at the table. good to have you back. there are two issues here. i want to kind of set -- there are three issues. i want to kind of separate them out. there is i think a completely preposterous demagoguic attack by the romney/ryan campaign was due to inviting weakness. in fact, attempts on u.s. embassies spiked during the reagan administration. it doesn't seem to correlate in any way. i want to put that to the side because i don't think that's a serious charge. here's the u.s. attacks on diplomatic targets we see during bush one, a huge spike. they're relative to history quite low under president

secretary of defense, leon panetta, publicly excoriated lt. colonel matthew dooley, saying that this teaching of this course was offensive, was unprofessional, and now, continuing on with the whole appeasement of the muslim group, they basically shut down the course, fired lt. colonel matthew dempsey from the position, and then ordered what was called a negative oer. which is an officer evaluation report. what is really troubling, up until this time. lt. colonel dooley, who was a 1994 graduate of the united states military academy at west point. he served as an aide-de-camp of three separate generals and his entire career has been characterized by outstanding performance and they've indicated he should be be promoted. he has unlimited potential. >> peter: let's talk about his promotion. his promotions are going to be blocked as a result of this. >> yes. >> peter: and your organization has taken a very strong position against general dempsey. you basically say he is advocated to the forces of sharia and islam in the world in not allowing lt. colonel dooley to teach at joint
